Kove rampages through the DnB soundscape

Looking for a quick switching journey into the spectrums of DnB?  Look no further than this eccentric rampage through the varied DnB soundscape, brought to SBM by the Data Transmission podcast series and mixed by producer/mixologist Kove.

DJ Kove is a clearly a man with a short attention span as tracks seem to come thick and fast but it only takes a few mins to grasp the character of the mix and roll with it to the end.  Kove has done a great job on this to ensure that styles and soundscape undulate perfectly, creating one hell of a journey.

Download

Featuring a good selection of Koves own productions.  The names and pieces throughout this selection are so consistently big that picking out a highpoint seems offensive.  In short the mix is full of smashes and deep rollers which Kove blends deeply at times.  Often the pieces in this track-listing are playing at the same time, three decks anyone?!?!

Code Recordings launch mix from Bachelors of Science

In celebration of the launch of Code Recordings, Bachelors of Science and Knowledge Magazine have decided to bless all with a journey into the soundscape of this new label.  This is an important piece and must be let free.

A blend of fresh deep, progressive and raw sounds sparkle through this selection as Bachelors of Science unleash a host of their own tracks in combination with other pieces, dark and light, which beg to be experienced.

Kicking off with a medley of their own collaborations the soundscape is dark and brooding with a nice focus on vocal pieces.

Royalston - Sound of the Rain Mix - Incredible selection for the Royalston sound

To celebrate the release of the Royalston – Sound of the Rain, Bad Taste Records has put out a cracker of a mix.  Royalston himself selects and blends tracks from this release with other excellent pieces to create a soundscape which examples his DJ and production set style.

The mix is eclectic, across Drum and Bass, to say the least.  Moving from melodic to raw across a number of unique Drum styles the listener is in for a treat from start to finish.  The first heady section comes (at 10mins) during the blend of Royalstons MA remix - If Thats How You Want it to Be, Culture Shock – Troglodyte and Audio – Headroom, a selection that works so well its worth playback after playback.  The tempo is stripped back nicely with the blend of Lynx - Disco Dodo and Nu Logic – Grizzly and brought up again with the headline track House of Mirrors.  This is a critical mix, get involved.

Fanu - Making the play - Refreshing the sound

Fanu officially begins his journey back to find an old 90’s Drum and Bass vibe, with the first instalment of his podcast series.  This Finnish mixologist and producer desires to drag an early sound back into the present.  Since his Mixmag podcast SBM has had the ears to the ground in anticipation for the next move.

Download

A few releases here and there have been welcomed with warm arms but his new Breaks ‘n’ Beats Podcast represents the initial tiptoes into what Fanu envisages as the representation of this soundscape.  The mix doesn’t disappoint.

With a few warm, funky first pieces, featuring some real raw rhythms and breaks the scene is set for something special.  Expect an increase in pace to a Jungle sound at 18 mins, which deviates to a dark more intelligent angle at 23 mins and leads up to a cracking drop into Seba – Balance Of Power. Everything mellows out at 30 mins with Naibu feat. Key – Play With Fire but picks up as the mix continues with a brilliant and subtle piece of mixology between Goreteks – Blesser Au L'Esprit and Paradox – Chords And Discords.  It’s the deep, deep bass of Chords and Discords which really carries this part, excellent.

There’s a wide scope of players in the mix, helping to exemplify the rich possibilities if the Fanu desire.  In his own words this is a mix of ‘Jungle, dirty beats, fat drums, ill sampling, sample mangling.

D&B as it should be, and how it was’, refreshing to the ear for many these days for sure.  A bit of variety never hurt anybody.

Calyx and Teebee - Bring a classic work of mixology to the Data Transmission Podcast

Another must hear mix from the datatransmission podcast series is the 268th instalment, brought to your ears by two of drum and bass heavyweights Calyx & Teebee.  Both artists cut their teeth with different sounds and labels, although a common theme with both has been to project a dark, raw, feel the bass ‘rather than hear’ in their productions.

This elegantly pieced together mix demonstrates this, moving from piece to piece with the rushing raw of Calyx tracks blended and the deep, moody almost mathematical sound of Teebee.

Download

The extensive track listing and complex track blend creates a progression and piece that is more than the sum of its parts.  Get this mix into your ears.  You can almost see the two of them having far too much fun whilst putting this mix together.

The mix undulates throughout moving into Dubstep pieces and changing the vibes style from deep to jumpup to progressive.  I’ve gone through two of the first highlights of this excellent piece but the quality comes thick and fast so just sit back and take the ride.

Initial highlights

At 7 mins the transition from Ulterior Motive – Drum Circle into Culture Shock – Troglodyle will get the blood pumping.  At 10 mins the boys bring you down with their collaboration, Pure feat.MC Kemo, only to kick start again, an excellent combo!!

For the Dubstep heards you can move to 18 mins for some sweet cross genre blending with a Calyx, Teebee unnamed piece weaved into the Wilkinson and Nosia sound.

An amazing journey into the sounds of both longstanding artists.  Hats off to Calyx and Teebee.
